🔍 What are Integers?

Integers are whole numbers that can be positive, negative, or zero. They include: ..., -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ...

-5
0
+7

📏 The Number Line

Integers can be represented on a number line. Positive integers are to the right of zero, negative integers are to the left.

➕ Adding Integers

Rules for Adding Integers:
  • Same signs: Add the numbers and keep the sign
  • Different signs: Subtract the smaller from the larger and use the sign of the larger
Examples:
(+3) + (+5) = +8
(-4) + (-2) = -6
(+7) + (-3) = +4
(-8) + (+5) = -3

➖ Subtracting Integers

Rule for Subtracting Integers:

To subtract an integer, add its opposite (additive inverse)

Examples:
(+5) - (+3) = (+5) + (-3) = +2
(+2) - (-4) = (+2) + (+4) = +6
(-7) - (+3) = (-7) + (-3) = -10
(-1) - (-5) = (-1) + (+5) = +4

⚖️ Comparing Integers

Rules for Comparing Integers:
  • Positive integers are greater than zero
  • Negative integers are less than zero
  • On the number line, numbers to the right are greater
  • The farther left a negative number is, the smaller it is
Examples:
5 > 0 > -3
-1 > -5
-10 < -2 < 0 < 7
