Diversity in the Living World
(जीव जगत में विविधता / सजीवांतील विविधता आणि वर्गीकरण)
Discover how plants and animals adapt to survive in extreme deserts, deep oceans, and high snowy peaks. Explore botanical patterns, taxonomy, and ecological diversity!
Habitat Adaptation & Natural Diversity Lab
👉 Investigate: Add mutations (white vs brown fur, long teeth) and switch between Equator (hot grassland) and Arctic (snow) environments. Watch how natural diversity allows species to survive predators!

Chapter 2 Concept Mind Map
Four interconnected pillars of biodiversity in the living world:
1. Plant Classification by Growth Form
- • Herbs (शाक): Short, green, delicate non-woody stems (e.g., Mint, Tomato, Wheat).
- • Shrubs (झाड़ी): Medium height, hard woody stem branching from near the ground (e.g., Rose, Lemon, Hibiscus).
- • Trees (वृक्ष): Tall, thick woody trunk (bark), branches higher up (e.g., Mango, Neem, Banyan).
- • Creepers & Climbers (विसर्पी व आरोही लताएँ): Weak stems needing support (e.g., Pumpkin, Money plant, Pea).
2. Roots & Leaf Venation Relationship
- • Reticulate Venation (जालिकारूपी शिराविन्यास): Net-like veins on leaves $\leftrightarrow$ Taproot (मूसला जड़) with one main central root (e.g., Mustard, Gram, Pea, Rose).
- • Parallel Venation (समांतर शिराविन्यास): Straight parallel veins $\leftrightarrow$ Fibrous Roots (झकड़ा/रेशेदार जड़) without a main root (e.g., Grass, Maize, Wheat, Bamboo).
3. Animal Kingdom Diversity
- • Vertebrates (कशेरुकी): With backbone/spinal column (Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds, Mammals).
- • Invertebrates (अकशेरुकी): Without internal backbone (Earthworm, Snail, Insects, Octopus).
- • Nutrition Type: Autotrophs (producers) vs Heterotrophs (herbivores, carnivores, omnivores).
4. Habitats (आवास) & Adaptations (अनुकूलन)
- • Terrestrial (स्थलीय): Desert (water conservation), Mountain (sloping conical shape), Grassland (speed, camouflage).
- • Aquatic (जलीय): Ocean & Freshwater (streamlined bodies, gills, webbed feet, air-filled stems).
- • Biotic vs Abiotic Components: Living creatures vs non-living factors (soil, water, light, air, temp).
In-Depth Micro-Topic Study Guide
Clear, exam-oriented explanations based on NCERT & Maharashtra State Board syllabi:
📌 Topic 1: What is Biodiversity & Why Does it Exist?
Biodiversity (जैव विविधता) refers to the immense variety of plants, animals, fungi, and micro-organisms living in different environments across Earth.
📌 Topic 2: Classification of Plants & Structural Diversity
| Type | Stem Character | Height | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Herbs (शाक) | Green, tender, soft, non-woody | Usually < 1 metre | Wheat, Paddy, Tomato, Grass, Mint |
| Shrubs (झाड़ी) | Hard, woody, branches near base | 1 to 3 metres | Rose, Hibiscus, Lemon, Mehndi |
| Trees (वृक्ष) | Thick, hard, brown woody trunk | Very tall (> 3 metres) | Mango, Banyan, Neem, Peepal |
| Climbers (आरोही) | Weak stem, climbs using tendrils/support | Variable | Money Plant, Grapevine, Pea |
| Creepers (विसर्पी) | Weak stem, spreads along ground | Ground spreading | Watermelon, Pumpkin, Strawberry |
• Net-like (Reticulate) veins = Taproot (Single thick root with lateral rootlets).
• Parallel veins = Fibrous roots (Cluster of equal-sized hair-like roots from stem base).
📌 Topic 3: Habitat Adaptations Matrix (NCERT Essentials)
🏜️ Desert (मरुस्थल)
• Cactus: Leaves reduced to sharp spines to prevent water loss (transpiration); green stem carries out photosynthesis and stores water; deep roots.
• Camel: Long legs keep body above hot sand; broad padded feet prevent sinking; hump stores fat; excretes very little urine; no sweat.
🌊 Aquatic (जलीय)
• Fish: Streamlined spindle shape reduces water resistance; gills absorb dissolved oxygen; fins & tail give balance and steering; slippery scales.
• Water Lily / Lotus: Long, hollow, light stems filled with air chambers; broad waxy leaves float on surface; stomata located on upper leaf side.
🏔️ Mountain (पर्वतीय)
• Trees: Conical shape with sloping branches allow heavy snow and rainwater to slide off easily; needle-like leaves resist freezing.
• Snow Leopard & Yak: Thick fur and woolly coat retain body warmth; padded paws provide traction on ice; strong hooves in mountain goats.
📌 Topic 4: Animal Kingdom: Vertebrates vs. Invertebrates
Animals are broadly separated based on whether they have a backbone (vertebral column):
• Fish: Cold-blooded, breathe with gills, lay eggs in water.
• Amphibians (उभयचर): Frogs/Salamanders live on both land & water; moist skin.
• Reptiles (सरीसृप): Snakes/Lizards have dry scaly skin, lay leathery eggs.
• Birds (पक्षी): Feathers, hollow pneumatic bones, wings, warm-blooded.
• Mammals (स्तनधारी): Humans/Cows/Whales have hair/fur, give birth to young, nurse with milk.
• Insects: 6 jointed legs, exoskeleton made of chitin (Ants, Butterflies, Mosquitoes).
• Annelids: Segmented soft bodies, breathe via skin (Earthworms, Leeches).
• Molluscs: Soft unsegmented body, often protected by hard shell (Snails, Clams, Octopus).
• Arachnids: 8 legs, no antennae (Spiders, Scorpions).
