Measurement of Length and Motion
(लंबाई एवं गति का मापन / गती व गतीचे प्रकार)
Trace the evolution of measurement from cubits to the SI system, eliminate parallax errors, and classify rectilinear, circular, periodic, and rotational motions!
PhET Forces, Motion & Speed Simulator
👉 Things to explore: Click on the “Motion” screen. Apply push force to the wooden crate or skateboard. Notice how velocity changes, and observe how objects continue moving in rectilinear motion when friction is removed!

Motion Classifier Lab
Classify moving objects into Rectilinear, Circular, Periodic, or Random motion!
Straight line path.
Path along circular radius.
Repeats at equal time gaps.
Unpredictable directions.
How to Read a Ruler Correctly
Case 1: Ruler with a Damaged / Broken Zero End
If the zero ($0\text{ cm}$) mark is chipped off, do NOT discard the ruler. Align the object with another clear mark (e.g. $2.0\text{ cm}$):
Case 2: Parallax Error (Position of the Eye)
Your line of sight must be perpendicular (exactly vertically above) the mark you are reading.
The Framework of Measurement & Motion
1. Ancient Units
• Handspan (बिलांस्त): Tip of thumb to pinky.
• Cubit (हाथ): Elbow tip to middle fingertip.
• Problem: Human body sizes differ; created disputes in trade and science.
2. SI Units (Metric)
• Standard: Metre ($m$) adopted globally.
• $1\text{ km} = 1000\text{ metres}$
• $1\text{ m} = 100\text{ centimetres}$
• $1\text{ cm} = 10\text{ millimetres}$
3. Curved Lines
• Straight rulers cannot bend along river curves or round waistlines.
• Solution: Trace with an inelastic thread, knot the ends, then lay flat on a meter ruler.
4. 4 Types of Motion
• Rectilinear: Along a straight line.
• Circular: Around fixed center.
• Periodic: Repeats at regular times.
• Random: Unpredictable changes.
Micro-Topic Study Notes
1. What is Motion & The Role of a Reference Point?
An object is said to be in motion if its position changes with respect to time and a stationary surrounding point called the Reference Point (मूल बिंदु).
• Example: To a person standing on a railway platform, passengers inside a passing train are in motion. But to a fellow seated passenger, everyone inside the coach appears at rest!
2. Objects with Multiple Motions Simultaneously
Many real-world objects exhibit more than one type of motion at the exact same moment:
• Rolling Ball / Bicycle Wheel: It rotates around its axle (Rotational/Circular motion) while translating forward along the ground (Rectilinear motion).
• Sewing Machine: The wheel turns with circular motion, while the needle moves up and down rapidly in periodic/oscillatory motion.
• Earth: Rotates on its axis (rotational) while revolving around the Sun (circular & periodic).
