1. Clinical Thermometer 0 / 3

Fits strictly within 35°C to 42°C range (Human body only).

2. Laboratory Thermometer 0 / 3

Fits broad scale from -10°C to 110°C (Water, boiling, ice).

3. Daily Ambient & Weather 0 / 2

Measured by Max-Min Thermometer for climate/rooms.

Crucial Exam Concept

Why Does a Clinical Thermometer Have a “Kink”?

The Constriction Secret

🩺 Clinical Thermometer (Has a Kink)

When taken out of a patient’s mouth, the ambient air is cooler. Without a kink (constriction), the mercury would instantly shrink back into the bulb before the doctor could read it!

The Kink Function: It blocks the falling mercury column. A doctor must give the thermometer a sharp jerk to force the mercury back into the bulb before the next patient!

🧪 Laboratory Thermometer (NO Kink)

Designed to measure immediate, ongoing changes in temperature.

Crucial Lab Rule: A laboratory thermometer must be read while its bulb is still immersed inside the liquid! The moment you pull it out, the mercury level drops immediately.

Interactive Converter: Celsius ($^\circ\text{C}$) to Fahrenheit ($^\circ\text{F}$)

37.0°C = 98.6°F
0°C (Ice Freezing) 37°C (Human Body) 100°C (Boiling Water)

Temperature Master Mind Map

🔥

1. Heat vs. Temperature

• Heat: A form of thermal energy.
• Temperature: The degree of hotness or coldness.
• Our skin/touch is unreliable (proved by 3-mug test).

🩺

2. Clinical Thermometer

• Range: $35^\circ\text{C}\text{ to }42^\circ\text{C}$ ($94^\circ\text{F}\text{ to }108^\circ\text{F}$).
• Has a narrow constriction (kink).
• Jerked before reuse to reset mercury.

🧪

3. Lab Thermometer

• Range: $-10^\circ\text{C}\text{ to }110^\circ\text{C}$.
• NO kink; continuous real-time reading.
• Must be read while bulb is in the liquid.

📱

4. Digital & Safety

• Mercury Toxicity: Mercury is a hazardous liquid metal.
• Digital Thermometer: Uses electronic thermistors without toxic mercury.

Textbook Summary

Micro-Topic Study Guide

1. Why Sense of Touch Fails (The 3-Bowl Activity)

Take three bowls: Bowl A (ice cold water), Bowl B (lukewarm water), and Bowl C (warm water).
• Put your left hand in Bowl A and right hand in Bowl C for 1 minute.
• Now plunge both hands simultaneously into Bowl B (lukewarm).
• Result: Your left hand reports the water is warm, while your right hand reports the exact same water is cold!
Conclusion: Our sense of touch is relative and cannot be trusted for accurate temperature measurement. A calibrated thermometer is essential.

2. Why Can’t We Use a Clinical Thermometer to Measure Boiling Water?

A clinical thermometer is designed exclusively for the human body, with a maximum scale limit of $42^\circ\text{C}$. Water boils at $100^\circ\text{C}$. If placed in boiling water, the expanding mercury will shatter the glass tube violently! Always use a Laboratory Thermometer (up to $110^\circ\text{C}$) for boiling liquids.

3. Maximum-Minimum Thermometer for Weather Forecasts

Daily newspaper weather reports quote the “Maximum temperature was $42^\circ\text{C}$ and Minimum was $24^\circ\text{C}$”. These extreme daily thresholds are automatically recorded over a 24-hour cycle by a specialized U-shaped tube called a Maximum-Minimum Thermometer (Six’s Thermometer).
